About Me

foodess_lg About MeYou’ve found me, Jennifer Hill – cookbook devourer, food magazine addict, dietitian-in-training and brazen lover of all things edible. I’m the cook, blogger and photographer at foodess.com.

My enthusiasm for eating is as long-standing as my memory itself. The absolute earliest event I can recall of my childhood is of my second birthday when I was gifted a plastic kitchen set – the most glorious thing I had ever seen. I remember standing on my tippy toes to see inside the gleaming blue faux-toaster. My toaster. Sigh, I created many a plastic feast from that beaut’.

When I was six (about the age when I used my outdoor voice to declare, “forget the kiddie menu - tonight, I’m having lobster!”), my gastronomic excitement progressed to “cooking” things. Poor mom was gardening or painting, blissfully unaware of the chaos and sheer joy that was overtaking her once respectably clean kitchen. I recall one of my bolder endeavours involved mixing flour, eggs, Tobasco sauce and cocoa powder, and microwaving it. I even took the time to painstakingly write out the “recipe” in my second grade double-spaced penmanship (brows furrowed in concentration and little pink tongue poking out corner of mouth).

This unabashed, sheer bliss that I encounter when thinking about, reading about, talking about and writing about food led me to a career in… you got it, food. I am just finishing my degree in dietetics, and I will shortly have the lovely letters “R.D.” forever affixed to my name.

But as much as I absolutely can’t get enough of the science – and I am thrilled to no end by the molecular adventures of humble nutrients – at the end of the day, it all comes back to food, whole and simple. Where it comes from, how it is prepared, how it is shared… the traditions, the imagination, the love… sigh. Give me a cookbook with pictures and I’m as gaga as a 13-year-old with a Teen magazine feature on the Jonas brothers.

Through this blog, I want to share with you my passion and my earnest efforts in the kitchen to create delicious, nourishing, adventurous, beautiful, (did I say delicious?) food for friends, family, my hungry and adoring boyfriend, Adarsh, and with scraps, of course, for our irresistibly dorky Irish Setter.

At this very moment, there is a good chance that I am hunkered down in front of my oven (nose pressed to glass, doubly-mitted hands holding on to the oven door like a safety bar on a roller coaster) awaiting something delicious to share with you. I will let you know when it’s done. To keep updated, subscribe to my RSS feeds, subscribe to my newsletter, and follow me on Twitter!
